The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed reports circulating online alleging that Lieutenant Ahmed M. Yerima, a Nigerian Navy officer, was trailed by unidentified men in Kubwa on Sunday evening in what was described as an assassination attempt.
Earlier, military sources had claimed that two unmarked Hilux vans allegedly followed Lt. Yerima from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Kubwa Motorway down to Gado Nasco Road, prompting the officer to carry out evasive manoeuvres. The situation, according to the sources, was said to be under investigation.
However, in a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, clarified that no such incident had been reported to any division under the FCT Command.
“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima,” the statement read.
“The Command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.”
Describing the claims as false and capable of inciting undue fear among residents, Adeh urged the public to disregard the information.
She further called on residents to remain security-conscious and promptly report suspicious movements to the nearest police formation to ensure public safety.
