Wike Fumes Over Alleged Land Occupancy By Ex-Naval Chief

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has expressed outrage over the alleged forceful occupation of a disputed plot of land in Abuja by soldiers said to be acting on the orders of a former Chief of Naval Staff.

Wike described the action as “lawless, unacceptable, and an abuse of power,” warning that no individual—regardless of status or past office—would be permitted to intimidate government authorities or undermine lawful enforcement activities in the nation’s capital.

The minister issued the warning on Tuesday during an unscheduled visit to the site, following reports that armed soldiers had chased away officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) who were on legitimate enforcement duty.

According to Wike, officials from the FCTA’s Land Department and Development Control were carrying out their statutory mandate to stop illegal development when they were confronted by the soldiers.

“When this issue was brought to my attention, I instructed them to ensure that no activity continues there because there are no valid documents—no regional approval, no proof of legal acquisition,” he said.

He added that the soldiers allegedly acting on the retired naval officer’s orders had prevented the officials from performing their duties.

“I was told that soldiers chased them away, which I found to be an illegal act. Then, this morning, I got another call that the military had completely taken over the place. I decided to come and see things for myself. What I’ve seen is really unfortunate,” Wike said.

Expressing disappointment at the conduct of the ex-military chief, Wike said it was disgraceful that someone who once held such a high office would resort to intimidation instead of due process.

“I don’t understand how someone who once served this country at that level cannot approach my office to resolve a matter legally. Because he’s a military man, he believes he can use soldiers to intimidate Nigerians. I will not be intimidated,” he declared.

The minister disclosed that the purported developers failed to produce any valid documents when approached by FCTA officials.

“The Director of Development Control asked for their documents—they had none. He asked for building approval—they couldn’t present any. How do we allow this kind of impunity to continue? What about ordinary citizens who don’t have soldiers to back them up?” he queried.

Wike emphasized that the FCTA would not condone the use of military might to obstruct lawful urban regulation, stressing that the law applies to everyone equally.

“I have spoken with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff. They’ve both assured me that the situation will be handled. We’re not here to create conflict or cause trouble, but I will not allow this level of impunity in Abuja,” he said.

Reaffirming his administration’s determination to sanitize land administration in the FCT, Wike vowed that all illegal developments—no matter who is behind them—will be halted.

“Whether it’s a former Chief of Naval Staff or anyone else, the law must take its full course. Nobody will use power or influence to grab government land under my watch,” he concluded.
