The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially announced that the 2025 NWFL Championship will take place in Abia State from September 11 to 21, 2025. The tournament, which represents the second tier of women’s football in Nigeria, will feature 17 clubs competing for promotion to the elite NWFL Premiership.
According to the NWFL’s Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, the Championship is part of the league body’s 2025 calendar and follows the successful completion of the 2024/25 Premiership Super 6 earlier this year in Ikenne.
Speaking during Monday’s announcement, Shabi emphasized the league’s commitment to transparency and excellence.
“We want to assure all participating teams that the Championship will be conducted under the highest standards of fair play, with a level playing ground for everyone involved,” Shabi said.
“Our commitment is to ensure that the competition reflects the values of transparency, integrity, and sporting excellence.”
The 17 participating teams will be drawn into four groups, with the draw and pre-match meetings set to take place on September 12. Matchday One will kick off on September 13 and the competition will run through to September 21. Rest days have been scheduled in between matchdays to ensure players’ recovery and peak performance.
The group winners will automatically earn promotion to the NWFL Premiership for the 2025/2026 season, with four promotion tickets up for grabs.
Matches will be held at two venues: the Abiriba Stadium and the Umuahia Township Stadium, both located in Abia State.
