The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has called on political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to ensure that campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections are focused on issues, programmes, competence and character rather than bitterness and violence.
Guwor made the call on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in his opening address to members of the House as the Assembly resumed plenary after its annual recess.
The Speaker noted that the resumption of plenary coincided with the commencement of another phase in the nation’s democratic journey, with campaigns for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections having commenced on August 19, while campaigns for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on September 9.
He urged politicians and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the electoral period.
“As politicians and public servants, we have a special responsibility to ensure that the electoral season does not become a season of bitterness, violence and division,” Guwor said.
He added: “Let our campaigns be about ideas, programmes, competence, character and service. Election is not a do-or-die affair.”
The Speaker also congratulated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the government and people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the creation of the state, which was celebrated while the lawmakers were on recess.
Guwor expressed gratitude to God for His protection and guidance over members of the Assembly and their families during the recess, saying the lawmakers had returned refreshed and ready to resume legislative duties.
He commended the Oborevwori administration for successfully hosting the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit, describing it as a strategic platform for showcasing the investment opportunities available across the state and connecting Delta with domestic and international investors.
“This is a commendable initiative,” he stated, assuring that the House would continue to provide the legislative support required to create an enabling environment for investment, enterprise and economic development.
The Speaker further described the expansion of representation in the Delta State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 elections as a historic development.
He noted that the number of State Constituencies had increased from 29 to 38, creating nine additional constituencies and providing more communities with direct representation in the democratic process.
“Representation is at the heart of democracy. The restoration and creation of additional constituencies provide an opportunity for more communities to have a direct voice in this institution and in the democratic process,” he said.
Guwor charged lawmakers to deploy the knowledge and insights gained from their leadership training at the London Business School to improve legislative performance.
He urged chairmen and members of House committees to approach the remaining legislative calendar with renewed commitment, particularly in dealing with pending Bills, Motions and Petitions.
“There is much work before us,” the Speaker said, urging members to attend to pending legislative business “with dispatch.”
He expressed confidence that the House would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities effectively in the interest of the people of Delta State.
The Speaker subsequently welcomed members back to plenary and called for renewed commitment to legislative duties as the Assembly enters the final phase of its legislative calendar.
